Prescriptions

We are fortunate to have a Dispensary at the Surgery and dispense medication to most of our patients.  Medicines prescribed during a consultation can usually be collected straight away. The dispensary opening hours are the same as the Surgery, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

We are only allowed to dispense medicines if you present a pre-payment card/certificate or pay the full prescription charge or provide proof of exemption from charges.  The prescription charge is set by the government, not the Practice. As you are accountable for your own health and medication, it is YOUR responsibility to ensure that any ‘exemption from charges/pre-payment’ certificate/card is renewed on time. It is NOT the responsibility of the Dispensers to remind you to renew your ‘exemption from charges/pre-payment’ certificate/card. If your ‘exemption from charges/pre-payment’ certificate/card expires and you continue to order medication and sign the back of the prescription to say that you have a valid ‘exemption from charges/pre-payment’ certificate/card, the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) will write to you to request full payment for each prescription items and they may also impose a fine. The Practice has no jurisdiction over any action that the NHSBSA takes.

Prescription Fees

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS Charges

Prescription costs as of April 2023:

Prescription (per item)£9.65
3 month pre-payment certificate (PPC)£31.25
12 month PPC£111.60

  • A three monthly pre-payment certificate (PPC) saves you money if you need four or more items in three months.
  • A 12 month certificate saves money if 15 or more items are needed in 12 months.

PPCs are available by 10 monthly direct debit instalment payments. The prescription prepayment certificates allow anyone to obtain all the prescriptions they need for £2 per week.
